Johnny Q has done it again. The Great Bonza Reserve Shiraz Cabernet 2022 is exactly the sort of Aussie red we love finding – seriously generous drinking without the seriously hefty price tag.

Made by John Quarisa, one of Australia’s masters of over-delivering reds, this is a classic 75% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet blend with everything turned up to a hundred. It’s rich and full-bodied, packed with dark berry fruit, blackcurrant and black cherry, then layered with warming spice, liquorice, coffee and a generous lick of oak. Plush, powerful and satisfyingly smooth.

And the judges are clearly on board. There’s Gold at the 2023 NZ International Wine Show, another Gold at the 2025 International Wines & Spirits Awards, and most recently 5 Stars and No.2 Australian Shiraz from Cuisine Magazine in 2026.

Cuisine summed it up nicely as “quintessentially Australian” - and that’s exactly the appeal here. Big fruit. Big flavour. Loads of character. The sort of red you open with a steak on the grill and wonder why you didn’t grab a few more bottles.

Cuisine Magazine writes "Medium coloured in the glass and quintessentially Australian with ripe fruit, lots of oak and layers of rich dark fruits and currants with lovely spice and tangy pepper on a richly concentrated palate. Undoubtedly there’s a lot going on but it’s all held beautifully in balance."

The winery writes "Bright purple with red hues. Full of red cherry, plum and blackcurrant aromas balanced with spicy vanillin oak."
