Smith and Sheth's CRU range represents the very top tier of their wines and every attention is given to the growing, harvesting and production of these wines. Their fruit for their Heretaunga Syrah predominantly comes from the famed Gimblett Gravels sub-region and it shows classic dark berry fruit characters with a hint of peppery spice. Oak treatment has added complexity and structure. Drink now or tuck some away.

Tasting Notes

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Youthful and perfumed, the enticing bouquet shows Black Doris plum, raspberry, warm spice, game and toasted almond characters, leading to a beautifully weighted palate offering fine texture backed by grainy tannins. Superbly structured with graceful power, finishing impressively long and sturdy. At its best: 2026 to 2040."
Cameron Douglas MS writes"A wine of texture and youth with core aromas and flavours of boysenberry and spice, dark plum and leather, raspberry and violets. There’s layers of wood spice and earth with firm tannins and plenty of aciidty for mouthfeel and length. A lovely example, happy to be your cellar for a while longer with best drinking from early 2026 through 2034+."
Candice Chow writes "100% fruit from the free draining Gimblett Gravels, the wine displays ripe black fruit with herb and spice on a savoury line and velvety, fine-grained tannins. The fragrant finish is particularly captivating."
Bob Campbell MW writes "Intense, aromatic and fruity aroma with cassis, raspberry and black pepper flavours. supported by vibrant, tangy, high energy tannins. Accessible wine that can be appreciated now or allowed to develop with bottle age."
The winery writes "Deep ruby red colour. Aromas of ripe blackberry, plum, red liquorice, and delicate florals show beautifully. The palate is medium bodied with flavours of ripe black fruits, raspberry, anise, pepper, thyme and a thread of vanilla, cinnamon and cedar from oak and fruit. The finish is long with a savoury twist."
