FIVE STARS 94/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit - "Succulent and plump, delivering fleshy texture"

For over 90 years, Selaks has honoured the vision of Croatian-born founder Marino Selak - to craft wines worth gathering for. Today, winemaker Kate Curd continues that legacy with the Selaks Founders range, a limited-edition collection that capture the best of each vintage with precision, passion, and tradition.

A small but exceptional 2024 Hawke’s Bay vintage has produced a Syrah of rare depth and elegance. Eight months in oak add subtle spice to its deep ruby core of sweet violet, fresh blackcurrant, and lush dark fruits. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity carry a long, refined finish.

Tasting Notes

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Offering pristine fruit notes with savoury nuances, the wine shows dark cherry, wild strawberry, cracked pepper, thyme, and toasted nut aromas on the nose. It's succulent and plump in the mouth, delivering fleshy texture backed by beautifully infused tannins, finishing persistent and flavoursome. At its best: now to 2032."
The winery writes "Deep ruby red. Captivating aromas of sweet violet and fresh black currant. Luscious, rich dark red fruits, complimented by subtle notes of vanilla, dried herbs and black pepper. Satin-like tannins on the finish, with a great acid drive. Sourced from Selak’s Corner 50 Vineyard, this Syrah is a stylish and well-rounded expression of the Hawke’s Bay region. The grapes were carefully harvested, then crushed and destemmed before undergoing fermentation on skins to achieve a rich, vibrant colour. This process was enhanced by a warm, open-top fermentation, which further developed the wine’s aromatic profile and depth. Following fermentation, the wine was matured in oak barrels for 8 months, allowing it to develop a refined structure and subtle oak nuances."
