94/100 'Excellent' | Cameron Douglas MS - "Nice weight and texture"

Petane Station are a seriously boutique producer based in Esk Valley, Hawke's Bay. Viticulturalist and winemaker Phil works with his graphic designer wife (and their two young children on hand as eager grape samplers) to produce lovingly crafted, small batch wines.

This chardonnay shows lovely weight and texture from careful lees stirring, balancing ripe citrus and stone fruit flavours with creamy vanilla and subtle nutty notes. The palate is generous yet refined, finishing long and smooth. A superb match for roasted poultry, creamy shellfish dishes, or rich, indulgent cheeses.

* Please note: Petane Station sustained devastating damage to their home and vineyards as a result of Cyclone Gabrielle. Majority of these bottles were label damaged during the cyclone and have been discounted accordingly - the bottles have all been washed and thoroughly inspected, and are deemed safe for consumption as per the meticulous MPI requirements.

Tasting Notes

Cameron Douglas MS writes "Bright, fresh, varietal and attractive bouquet with a pure fruit core of white fleshed stone fruits then citrus, some floral notes then sweet oak. Nice weight and texture from occasional barrel stirring and a mix of seasoned and new oak, hazel nut, with some macadamia and vanilla in the background. Fine dusty wood tannins keep the texture flowing while acidity and alcohol carry flavour through to a lengthy finish."
The winery writes "This is a classic Burgundian style chardonnay; tight, linear and full of toasty, nutty flavour. Rich, complex and crisp with lively summer fruit characters, this wine is barrel fermented (20% new) in a masterful mix of hogsheads, barriques and puncheons. This subtle oak integration, with its natural malolactic fermentation, creates subtle layers of spice and texture."
