Earlier this year came the sad news that Napier's highly regarded National Distillery had been placed into liquidation and would cease trading. They had built an outstanding reputation and an enviable line-up of award-winning spirits, so it was little surprise that remaining stocks were quickly snapped up around the country. A handful of special project releases have recently been made available by the liquidator, and we've been fortunate enough to secure a small parcel of this exceptional Reserve Chardonnay Gin.

This is gin with a seriously unique Hawke's Bay twist. Made in Napier by National Distillery Co., The Reserve Chardonnay Gin brings together two things the region does exceptionally well - premium spirits and world-class chardonnay.

It starts life as a bright, juniper-led gin before being aged in ex-Clearview 2013 Reserve Chardonnay barrels. The time in oak completely transforms it, adding layers of buttery richness, bold barrel character and a beautifully creamy texture. Think old-school, full-bodied chardonnay influence wrapped around a seriously good gin.

Bottled at 44% and presented in premium, wax-dipped Bordeaux bottles, this looks every bit as special as it tastes. Sip it neat to get the full effect, or pair it with a quality tonic and let that distinctive chardonnay barrel character do the talking. A fascinating release that's well worth a look for gin lovers after something a little different.
