Mount Riley's 17 Valley range showcases a more refined and sophisticated side of Marlborough winemaking, and this excellent 2023 Chardonnay is a perfect example. Named after the Seventeen Valley vineyard, the range takes its inspiration from carefully selected vineyard sites and a hands-on approach to winemaking, producing wines with genuine character, complexity and regional expression.

Crafted by winemakers Mutt Murphy and Mike Mullany, this Chardonnay brings together handpicked fruit from Mount Riley's Seventeen Valley and St Andrew's vineyards. A combination of two Chardonnay clones delivers generous ripe stone fruit flavours with lovely citrus undertones, while thoughtful oak treatment adds another layer of richness and complexity.

This chardonnay has been given the full winemaking treatment - handpicked fruit, fermentation in French oak barrels (25% new), followed by regular lees stirring to build richness, texture and complexity. The oak is seamlessly integrated, complementing the ripe fruit without overpowering it, while refreshing acidity keeps everything wonderfully balanced.

It's not often you come across a chardonnay at this price that's been given this level of care and attention in the winery. Beautifully presented in lay-flat six packs, this is a very smart package. At just $16.99, it's exceptional value.

The winery writes "Stone fruit, citrus and a touch of gunflint combine with beautifully integrated spice and toast characters derived from the fermentation in barrel. A wine of complexity and character. Fruit concentration is supported by mealy texture, spice and toasted nuts, and a bright natural acidity, creating a wine with balance and length of flavour."
