Monte Christo Alexandra Pinot Noir 2024

Price: $94.99

95/100 'Outstanding' | Cameron Douglas MS
FIVE STARS 94/100 | Candice Wine Chat

Monte Christo’s story begins in 1864, when French pioneer Jean Désiré Féraud settled in Central Otago’s Alexandra Basin after finding success during the gold rush. Recognising the region’s potential, he established the Monte Christo homestead and helped lay the foundations for Central Otago’s future as a renowned wine-growing region. Today, Monte Christo continues that pioneering legacy, crafting wines that reflect the character and beauty of the land.

Crafted by Karl Coombes from a selection of Pinot Noir clones grown in the Alexandra Basin, this wine combines fruit from 57% Davishon Vineyard and 43% Springvale Vineyard. Hand-harvested and wild fermented, it was matured for 10 months in French oak, with 29% new barrels, enhancing complexity while preserving vineyard character. Rich with dark cherry, plum and subtle spice, the palate is silky, vibrant and elegantly structured.

Tasting Notes

Candice Chow writes "This has a pretty, delicate expression of red fruit, apt acidity, a layer of rosehip and a dusty textured, spiced finish."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Fabulous expression of Pinot Noir fruit with core aromas and flavours of boysenberry and dried hay, dark plums and stones, wild dried herb and black cherry skin. The use of oak is defined and well placed adding spice and a touch of smoke. Earthy and dry with firm tannins and a backbone of acidity framing the core fruit flavours very nicely. Nothing overdone, well made with a lengthy finish. Best drinking from 2027 through 2032+."
The winery writes "This Pinot Noir displays notes of strawberries, blackberries, red flowers and cinnamon spice. On the palate, it is elegant with very fine tannins."
