BIG, BOLD & BUTTERY HAWKE'S BAY CHARDONNAY

93/100 'Excellent' | Cameron Douglas MS - "Full bodied, weight and classic creaminess coats the palate"

If you like your Chardonnay big, bold and buttery, then this is the wine for you. Mills Reef has a long-standing reputation for producing seriously good Hawke's Bay wines, and this 2024 Reserve Chardonnay is an absolute belter. Rich, generous and beautifully textured, it's everything we love about a full-flavoured chardonnay.

There's plenty of winemaking pedigree behind this Reserve release. Fermented and matured in French oak barrels, 33% of which were new, the wine spent twelve months in oak with regular lees stirring to build richness, texture and complexity. Partial malolactic fermentation brings that lovely buttery character to the fore, resulting in a beautifully rounded Chardonnay with all the depth and generosity you'd expect from a wine carrying the Mills Reef Reserve label.

The result is a generously proportioned Hawke's Bay Chardonnay with plenty of richness and oak influence. Highly recommended.

Tasting Notes

Cameron Douglas MS writes "A deepening yellow core with straw and flecks of gold lead to a bouquet of baked red apple and fresh peach, there’s a layer of baking spices, vanilla and Brazil nut leesy qualities. A wine with ripeness and complexity. Full-bodied, dry, weighty and classic creaminess coats the palate. Fruit flavours and leesy oak and tannin textures dominate the palate then a contrasting seam of acidity offers contrast and balance. Well made, dry and lengthy. A classic example from the Leveret and Mills Reef stable. Ready to drink from day of purchase through 2029."

The winery writes "This excellent chardonnay is highly appealing, with pronounced nectarine, baked peach, rock melon, nashi pear and ginger spice flavours, finishing with subtle butterscotch notes, ensued with a touch of cashew, vanilla and toasty oak, conferring a lovely creamy weight, length and complexity. Full bodied and perfectly balanced, enjoy with pan fried fish and a caper butter sauce, or cellar judiciously for 3-4 years."
