The Gimblett Gravels has established itself as one of New Zealand's great Syrah-growing regions, producing wines with impressive depth, richness and unmistakable character. Mills Reef has a long history of working with this prized Hawke's Bay terroir, and their 2024 Reserve Syrah is a cracking example of just how appealing these wines can be.

There's plenty to like here. Very supple and appealing, this is beautifully poised wine - densely framed with an amalgam of red, black and blue fruits presiding over a palate that shows classic Gimblett Gravels Syrah anise characters and a healthy dollop of oak spice. Rich enough to satisfy those who enjoy a full-flavoured red, yet polished and approachable enough to make reaching for a second glass an easy decision.

This is the sort of satisfying, well-made Hawke's Bay Syrah that deserves a place on the dinner table.

Cameron Douglas writes "A very good bouquet and palate of dark plums and blackberry, black currant flesh and stony soils. There’s a smoky woody quality framing the bouquet with a clove and vanilla quality, then peppery spices and warming alcohol quality. Dry with a satin-cream mouthfeel then as the tannins and acidity layer through the palate the wine gains tension and sensory impact. Generous and well made with best drinking from day of purchase through 2029."

The winery writes "This delicious syrah conveys blueberry, black Doris plum and subtle spice, with hints of blueberry and liquorice, with a lingering finish of toasty oak. Full bodied and imbued with supple integrated tannins make this wine complex and savoury. To be enjoyed on its own or try with roasted duck leg and plum sauce."
