Falconhead has been a favourite with the Advintage Faithful for years, and it comes with some serious Hawke’s Bay pedigree. It’s made by the winemaking team behind the Morton Estate juggernaut before that famous brand was sold to international buyers, and they certainly know their way around a good chardonnay.

Cameron Douglas MS calls this 2022 release “action packed”, and that pretty much nails it. Ripe Hawke’s Bay stonefruit leads the charge, backed by creamy texture, good palate weight and a gentle lick of oak. It’s mouthfilling, generous and loaded with flavour, but still has enough freshness to keep everything nicely in check.

Different parcels were fermented separately, some in stainless steel before heading to barrel and others fermented directly in oak. A mix of yeasts and time maturing in barrel built extra layers of flavour, richness and texture before everything was brought together for the final blend.

Finding chardonnay with this much personality at this sort of money is becoming increasingly difficult. If you like your chardonnay weighty, creamy and full of flavour, Falconhead seriously over-delivers for the price. Brilliant value - and absolutely worth loading up on.

Tasting Notes

Cameron Douglas MS writes "An enticing toasty, oaky then fruity bouquet with aromas of tropical fruits and peaches, red apple and vanilla oak qualities. Full-bodied and creamy textured with a baked apple custard and peach vanilla-cream flavours. Fine tannins and medium acid line, this is an action-packed wine."

The winery writes "Fresh peach, nectarine, and baked apple aromas complement a satin textured palate with roasted nut and stone fruit flavours accompanied by a layer of toasty oak."
