FIVE STARS 94/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit - "Succulent fruit flavours, a silky texture and fine tannins"
93/100 'Excellent' | Cameron Douglas MS
93/100 | Candice Wine Chat

Containing all the traditional hallmarks of a great Pinot Noir, this is a winner in all areas, with the 2021 vintage famously nabbing a Top 10 spot on Wine Enthusiast’s illustrious Top 100 Wines of 2022 list. Vinted as a tribute to Martinborough’s unique terroir and inspired by the great wines of Burgundy, the 2023 is beautifully perfumed, elegant and finely structured, with layers of ripe red cherry and dark berry fruit, savoury spice and subtle earthy complexity. There’s real depth here without becoming heavy, with fine tannins and bright acidity carrying everything through to a long, polished finish.

This is proper Martinborough Pinot from a producer that knows the variety inside out, delivering the combination of power, finesse and savoury complexity that has made the region famous. A superb match with duck, lamb or mushroom dishes - although it’s every bit as good flying solo. Classy stuff.

Tasting Notes

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "This is immediately appealing on the nose, showing sweet cherry, olive, clove, and toasted nut aromas. The palate is equally attractive, with succulent fruit flavours, a silky texture, and fine tannins, making it well-balanced and structured, with a lingering, soothing finish. At its best: now to 2033."

Cameron Douglas MS writes "I am immediately seduced by the natural scents of this wine with a core of site with a clay stone-like suggestion, wild red strawberry and flowers, cherry and barrel spice and gentle wood smoke. A dry wine led by textures from fine tannins and decent acid line, there’s length and mouthfeel throughout the palate then core flavours of light red berry fruits and spice. A fine savoury seam lingers adding length and style. Well made and ready to drink from day f purchase through 2030+."

Candice Chow writes "For this vintage, the majority of the fruit came from Te Muna Road, penetrating lifted nuances of red fruit and haunting floral notes, alongside broody herbs and silky tannins, elegantly framing the season."

The winery writes "A lovely perfume springs out of the glass, with wild berries, thyme, forest floor and Chinese 5 spice. It is a complex wine with savoury nuances and further notes of charcuterie, orange skin and dark chocolate. The palate is taught and focused with herbs, spice and dried fruit. The tannins are ripe and true to the region, giving the wine shape and identity. The wine showcases the purity of the 2023 vintage. Wines that are elegant but still with depth, concentration and structure. It is medium bodied and a distinct expression of Martinborough Pinot Noir and the vintage."
