FIVE STARS 95/100 | Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review
95/100 | James Suckling
94/100 'Excellent' | Cameron Douglas MS

Sourced from a single, celebrated block in Hawke’s Bay, Les Beaux Cailloux, meaning “the beautiful pebbles”, is the pinnacle of Craggy Range’s white winemaking. This exquisite Chardonnay is the estate’s most pure, complex, and refined expression, produced only in the very best vintages.

The 2023 release is a masterclass in precision and finesse. Expect layers of citrus, white peach, and toasted almond, carried by a fine mineral backbone and subtle oak integration. Its remarkable balance of power and elegance makes it one of New Zealand’s most distinguished Chardonnays - a wine crafted for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring. As Craggy Range’s flagship white wine, Les Beaux Cailloux is not only a benchmark for the estate but also a true icon of New Zealand Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes

Cameron Douglas MS writes "A complex and intriguing bouquet with scents of citrus and gun flint, grapefruit and stone, white fleshed stone fruits and apple. A layer of gentle French oak spices, a fine wood smoke echo then a delicate floral complexity. ON the palate, a reflection of the bouquet with more power and focus than the bouquet suggests. As the wine becomes ambient the textures of fine tannins and acidity frame the fruits perfectly leaving an aftertaste of elegance and youth. A lovely wine with best drinking from late 2025 through 2032."
Stephen Wong MW writes "A restrained nose with subtle peppery spice, green apple, waxy lemon and fresh thyme. The palate is built around its firm saline acid and phenolic structure, carefully layered with tense notes of oyster shell, apple blossom, honeydew melon, cinnamon oak and grapefruit pith. Entirely unevolved and a bit austere at its core, this only yields to vigorous swirling and long exposure to air, suggesting a very closed wine in its youth. Best left alone for a few years to meld and unfurl, this reticent and reserved wine will only reveal its innate, coiled power and depth if given time."
The winery writes "Light in colour with a pale straw hue. A vibrantbouquet of lemon curd and zest complemented byroasted hazelnuts. The palate is seamless, underscoredby a subtle saline and chalky tactility that maintains thefreshness. A harmonious blend of savoury and citruselements that signifies a true expression, reflecting theholistic style and terroir."
