Matawhero Church House Chardonnay 2025

Price: $38.99

FIVE STARS 95/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
93/100 'Excellent' | Cameron Douglas MS

Matawhero are making some really interesting Chardonnay these days, and this is a real beauty. The 2025 Church House is a generous, full-bodied style, bursting with ripe stonefruit flavours of peach and nectarine, layered with subtle citrus and a delicious hint of toasty oak.

It’s undergone 100% barrel fermentation, giving the wine extra richness, texture and complexity while still keeping everything beautifully balanced. There’s a lovely creaminess through the palate, with the oak sitting comfortably alongside the fruit rather than dominating it. The result is a harmonious, satisfying Chardonnay with plenty of flavour and a long, smooth finish.

If you like your Chardonnay with a bit of weight and richness, but still want freshness and balance, this is well worth getting into the glass. A cracking match with seafood, roast chicken and other white meats, creamy pasta dishes or a good cheese board.

Vegetarian and Vegan friendly.

Tasting Notes

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Complex and enticing, the bouquet showcases golden peach, French vanilla, oatmeal, and elegant oak aromas. The palate displays excellent weight and a plump mouthfeel, wonderfully supported by beautifully pitched acidity, making it well-balanced and lingering with delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2032."

Cameron Douglas MS writes "Hues of yellow and polished gold lead to a bouquet of fresh and yellow stone fruits, a sweet grapefruit peel and red apple with a seam of baking spice and nut, then a clay soil idea. On the palate a satin cream weighty texture touches first followed by flavours of stone and orchard fruits then spice and a gentle warmth from the alcohol. Plenty of acidity to offer contrast and mouthfeel along with a tickle of tannins from fruit and wood. Balanced and well made with complexity and charm, ready to drink from late 2026 through 2029+."
