SMALL PARCEL WINES FROM ONE OF HAWKES BAY'S GREATEST WINEMAKING TALENTS.

92/100 | Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review

Rod Easthope forged his reputation during his years as Head Winemaker at Craggy Range. These days his focus is on Easthope Winegrowers where he makes small parcel wines of the very highest calibre. The ethos behind Easthope's wines is to put the work in to the vineyard and let the quality of fruit speak for itself - and they have more than achieved that goal.

What was meant to be their tenth vintage of pure gamay turned into something unexpectedly delightful. Following harvest, DNA testing revealed that some of the vines previously identified as gamay were actually pinot noir. This serendipitous mix led to an unplanned yet harmonious blend - one that unintentionally echoes a 600-year-old relationship between the two varieties.

Sourced from the meticulously farmed Two Terraces Vineyard in Maraekakaho, this single-vineyard wine is silky and seductive with an alluring bouquet of red plum, ripe raspberry, rose petal, and delicate spice. Supply layers unfold on the palate leading to a persistent and structured finish. It balances aromatic charm with underlying power.

Tasting Notes

Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review writes "Ruby-coloured. This opens with an intensely sweet nose of wild raspberry and boysenberry supported by dried flowers, cinnamon spice, bay leaf and a savoury, earthy note lurking in the wings. The palate is densely concentrated yet possessing excellent flow and length as the ripe fruit flirts with raisin before settling into dried ume and salinity on the finish. Fine-grained tannins from both fruit and wood gently hold onto the back-palate. A serious rendition of gamay which can be enjoyed either in its youth of held for a year or two to develop mushroomy, spicy complexity."
The winery writes"2025 is a fabulous vintage. This has plenty of ripe fruit, enveloped by a satin like texture. Chill it a little and you have the perfect summer red."
