FIVE STARS 96/100 | Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review

From the 'vintage of a lifetime' comes this wonderful Gimblett Gravels Merlot Malbec from pioneering Hawke's Bay producers, Squawking Magpie. Only the finest handpicked grapes were selected for the premium 'SQM' range, and only quality parcels were carefully barrel-aged in French oak for this remarkable, small-batch, single vineyard red blend.

In the glass, this wine reveals a deep, brooding core of dark berries and ripe plum layered with notes of dark chocolate, baked earth and subtle, spicy oak. Big, warming and robust, the palate is dense and rich with a chewy, grainy texture that speaks of meticulous craftsmanship and exceptional terroir.

This wine is fully in its prime now, yet has the balance to reward careful cellaring until 2035. A Gimblett Gravels classic.

Tasting Notes

Bob Campbell MW writes "Dense, rich red with dark berry, plum, chocolate, baked earth and spicy oak flavours. A big, warming red with an almost chewy, grainy texture."
Raymond Chan Wine Reviews writes "Very full, deep, near impenetrable black-hued purple-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is softly full with opulent and lifted ripe fruit aromas of black and blue berries, along with black plums, liquorice and spices. Waves of ethereal richness unfold, revealing a deep and densely concentrated heart of iron and earth, black minerals and Asian spices. Full-bodied, the palate features mouthfilling, broad and succulently rich flavours of sweetly ripe black and blue fruits, spicy plums and liquorice, along with nuances of cedary oak. The fruit has concentration, density and depth, with very fine-grained, flowery tannins that build to balance the fruit sweetness, providing plenty of structure. The acidity is ripe and soft, lending energy and drive. The fruit richness grows as the wine flows to a very long and sustained, textural finish. This is a rich opulent, succulent Merlot-blend with full structure and ripe black, blue and spicy fruit."
