Village Vineyards are the new hot players on the Havelock wine scene. Dai & Jenny Evans started out as orchardists, producing world class fruit that filled Kiwi luncboxes and market shelves for years until the family decided to move into grapegrowing. After years in France honing his skills, son Rhys has taken the helm as winemaker and champions the 'soft hand' approach to winemaking, crafting exquisite low intervention wines.

Tractors may come and go over the years, but not Ironhorse. Dai and his faithful old Massey Ferguson have been a constant for years. When the orchard was sold, he couldn't bear the thought of her rusting away in a back paddock, so she made the move to her new home on the vineyard. This artwork on the label by Lisa Nicole captures Dai and Ironhorse getting the job done during their very first chardonnay harvest.

This minimal intervention 2022 chardonnay is both beatifully light and citrus driven, and yet offers rich textures and toastiness from its time spent in barrel. There's a slight reductive characteristic balanced beautifully by nuances of oyster shell and pear/dried apricots. Though drinking beautifully now, this chardonnay will cellar happily for up to ten years. De-lish.

Tasting Notes

Bright and expressive, this chardonnay opens with ripe stone fruit, citrus blossom and a hint of toasted almond. The palate is layered yet fresh, showing notes of peach and lemon curd balanced by subtle oak and a fine mineral thread. A creamy texture leads to a long, elegant finish with refreshing acidity.
