Monte Christo’s story begins in 1864, when French pioneer Jean Désiré Féraud settled in Central Otago’s Alexandra Basin after finding success during the gold rush. Recognising the region’s potential, he established the Monte Christo homestead and helped lay the foundations for Central Otago’s future as a renowned wine-growing region. Today, Monte Christo continues that pioneering legacy, crafting wines that reflect the character and beauty of the land.

Crafted by acclaimed winemaker Karl Coombes, the Monte Christo Pinot Noir 2023 blends fruit from the Alexandra Basin, Bannockburn, and Pisa sub-regions of Central Otago. A selection of Pinot Noir clones adds aromatic complexity, structure, and depth. The wine was matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (25% new), enhancing the fruit with subtle spice, savoury notes, and fine tannins. A refined and age-worthy pinot.

Tasting Notes

The winery writes "An enticing Pinot Noir, firm yetelegant, with red and black cherries, plum, raspberry, black tea and driedfloral notes."
Cameron Douglas MS writes "Very bright with a ruby core and purple-pink rim leads to a bouquet of vibrant dark fleshed cherry, raspberry and savoury dried herb and barrel spices. Youthful, fresh and very engaging. A youthful, taut wine touches the palate first with tension and poise held in place by the acidity and seam of newish French oak. Tannins layer in mouthfeel with a fine grained texture, the core fruit flavours deliver contrast and varietal highlights. A floral seam and mineral character adding breadth and complexity. A delicious wine that is drinkable today though best in your cellar with ideal drinking from 2027 through 2037."
