Rays Road is Kumeu River’s Hawke’s Bay vineyard, a limestone hillside sitting at 180 metres above sea level with a northerly aspect. Dry-farmed to produce low yields of high-quality fruit, the site brings a distinctive freshness and mineral character to Kumeu River’s Chardonnay style.

The 2024 was hand harvested and whole-bunch pressed before wild yeast fermentation in older French oak barrels. It underwent full malolactic fermentation followed by 11 months of maturation in barrel, building texture and complexity while retaining the vibrancy of the fruit.

Zesty and fragrant, the palate brings bright citrus and stone fruit together with a fine mineral edge and subtle savoury complexity. It has an elegant, beautifully balanced feel, with enough texture for roast chicken or creamy pasta while its freshness makes it an excellent match for fish and seafood. A refined chardonnay that speaks clearly of its limestone hillside origins.

The winery writes "The ripeness and richness from 2024 has given us a Rays Road Chardonnay with more depth and texture than we have seen over the last few years . This is another step up again from the 2023 Rays Road Chardonnay. The aromas are peachier this year although the distinctive flint, and zesty limestone characters are still there. The palate is showing more density and concentration than previous vintages and this is setting up to be a very fine Chardonnay vineyard."
