Monte Christo’s story begins in 1864, when French pioneer Jean Désiré Féraud settled in Central Otago’s Alexandra Basin after finding success during the gold rush. Recognising the region’s potential, he established the Monte Christo homestead and helped lay the foundations for Central Otago’s future as a renowned wine-growing region. Today, Monte Christo continues that pioneering legacy, crafting wines that reflect the character and beauty of the land.

Hand-harvested from the Davishon and Férauds vineyards in Central Otago's Alexandra Basin, this Chardonnay was crafted by Karl Coombes and matured for 11 months in a combination of neutral French oak and stainless steel. Richly textured from 100% malolactic fermentation, it offers layers of stone fruit, citrus and subtle savoury complexity, balanced by fresh acidity and a refined finish. Wonderful wine.

Tasting Notes

Stephen Wong MW writes "Restrained, zingy nose of citrus, bergamot, aromatic herbs and beeswax preface a mid-weight but compact palate with good density and youthful austerity. The flavours reprise here, building towards a deceptively long finish where pithy phenolics lengthen the mineral nuances towards the back. Quietly accomplished and built for ageing."
Cameron Douglas MS writes"This new releases expression showcases a finesse and charm before the bouquet releases scents of white peach and lemon. There’s an emerging seam of barrel spice and blossom as the wine begins to open out on glass. Dry with plenty of weight and tautness of youth touch the palate first, then flavours of citrus and white fleshed fruits begin to emerge again framed by the structure of oak, minerality and grab of acidity. Youthful with best drinking from early to mid 2025 through 2032+."
Candice Chow writes "This inviting Chardonnay was aged in neutral oak and stainless steel, showcasing forward fruit appeal, elevated by energetic acidity and a elegantly creamy mouthfeel."
