Zaria are a boutique Hawke's Bay producer with winemaker Bryce Edmonds at the helm. They take a minimal intervention approach to winemaking and their latest releases are vibrant, flavour-packed renditions of classic Hawke's Bay wines.
Their 2022 chardonnay is vinted from premium fruit from their Lesley's Vineyard block, with all of the juice going into barrels (20% new) for fermentation. Stonefruit and citrus notes dominate the palate, with secondary brioche characters playing a supporting role. The new oak makes an appearance, but it doesn't take over. Drinking well now but give it a few years in the cellar and those characters will develop further. Highly recommended.

Cameron Douglas MS writes "Aromas and flavours of fresh white peach and nectarine, a layer of citrus led by grapefruit then a lees spice, nut and soft butterscotch quality. A youthful wine with plenty of acidity and bite, a satin-cream texture, fine tannins and raw mouthfeel on the finish. Well made with a near full-bodied style, a touch of butter and cream. Well made with best drinking from 2024 through 2029."
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "Gorgeously styled and expressed, the enticing bouquet shows golden peach, lemon zest, vanillin oak and oatmeal nuances, leading to a concentrated palate offering terrific weight and persistency. Wonderfully framed by creamy texture and bright acidity, making it delicious and fabulously drinkable."
