FIVE STARS 97/100 | Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
94/100 & TOP WINE OF 2022 | Cameron Douglas MS
Exciting premium Hawkes Bay Syrah from Steve Smith MW - the man who drove the winemaking programme for Craggy Range for many years. Now producing wine under his own banner with American tech billionaire Brian Sheth, he is making some truly exciting variations on the classic New Zealand varietals and this is a wonderful example of modern Hawkes Bay Syrah. This is a compelling wine that floods the palate with savoury, dark spiced fruits and fine tannins. A very accomplished syrah.

Cameron Douglas MS writes "Great core of dark raspberry, black olive and black currant fruit aromas, layers of clove and baked vanilla toasty wood spices, a field mushroom and aged meat qualities with a dry stone mineral baseline. Complex and young. Flavours on the palate mirror the bouquet with dark berries and plums, meats and mushrooms and plenty of toasty new barrel sweet wood flavours. Weighty, fresh, satin-smooth and delicious. Best drinking from 2024 through 2029."
Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews writes "Deep, full, ruby-red with a purple hue, even colour throughout. The nose is elegant and structured with broody aromas of dark fruit of boysenberry, blackberry and plum melded with gravels, dark herbs, lavender and savoury dusting. Full-bodied, blackberry, boysenberry and plum aromas show purity, entwined with broody dark herbs, lavender, gravelly minerals and iodine, and linger with cedar and clove. The fruit is pure and concentrated with weight and depth; unfolding layers of herbs, minerals and cedar add interest and complexity. Finely extracted, ripe, savoury tannin provides structure and vitality alongside a fine acid line. This rich, broody Syrah features dark fruit with multilayers of herbs, minerals and spices, supported by fine tannin extraction and an acid backbone that suits extended cellaring. Match with venison and lamb racks over the next 15+ years."
The winery writes "Dense bright black cherry colour. Brooding aromas of black pepper, sandalwood, purple flowers and generous black fruits complete an almost addictive aroma. The palate is complimentary, full of brooding blueberry, dark cherry suite of fruit alongside distinctive wood spices, black pepper with a hint of fresh char alongside the distinctive energetic tone of iodine and mineral that is so distinctive to fine Gimblett Gravels Syrah. Cellaring potential 20 years."
