Cabernet Sauvignon was originally planted in the Bordeaux region and remains one of the six grape varieties approved in Bordeaux wines. It is now grown worldwide with significant areas found in Australia, California, South America and right here in New Zealand. It is also commonly used as a blending grape with varieties such as merlot, cabernet franc and malbec which help to soften and round out the stronger cabernet flavours.
Cabernet Sauvignon has a bolder and more intense flavour. Because of this, it pairs well with rich, hearty foods such as steak and lamb, burgers, and portabello mushrooms.
