Pyramid Valley North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2019

Waitaki Valley, New Zealand

95/100 'Outstanding' | Cameron Douglas MS
18.5/20 | Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews

Pyramid Valley are a boutique producer that focus on creating premium biodynamic wines from their vineyards in North Canterbury and Central Otago. Their pinot noir releases are the 'jewel in the crown' of the Pyramid Valley line up and we're thrilled to have them in store.

This 2019 North Canterbury release is complex and savoury with red cherry characters and subtle herbal notes on the palate. Firm tannins and a slight chalkiness add texture and interest. An elegant pinot - don't be afraid to tuck some away for a few years.

Tasting Notes

The winery writes "Bright appearance with a deep crimson hue. Deep brooding nose of plum and blue fruits with lifted floral spicey notes. Full bodied Pinot Noir with ripe, rich fruits, mouth filling texture and round plush tannins giving the wine weight and power with a savoury moreish finish."

Cameron Douglas MS writes "Complex , savoury, a core of pinosity, red berries and mineralaity showcase the bouquet. Red berries and dried herb, a savoury cherry quality, red currant and chalky texture from tannins. Acidity layers in a robustness to a youthful mouthfeel overall. Complex and layered with each new taste, a fine wine with energy, floral highlights and lengthy detailed finish. Great drinking from late 2023 through 2030+."

Candice Chow writes "Deep ruby-red with good transparency, lighter edged. The nose is gently full, nuances of dark herbs and earth melded with savoury plums, black cherries, subtle black pepper and floral fragrance. Medium-full bodied, earthy nuances of dark herbs, savoury ash, unfolding black pepper, black cherries, fragrant plums, cherry blossoms, orange pith; aromas linger for a lasting savoury finish. The wine has a positive rawness, pure and complex; powdery tannin is supple and natural, added a fine layer to the palate. This is a savoury Pinot Noir in its pure form with flavours of dark fruit, herbs and earth on a supple, natural tannin palate."
