A Champion Wine of Show Trophy at the NZIWS - New Zealand's largest wine show - confirms the spectacular value that this 2023 Central Otago Pinot Noir offers.
The previous vintage of this powerful, all conquering release from McArthur Ridge was awarded a most prestigious award - Best in Show Pinot Noir at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2024, effectively making it the World's Best Pinot Noir. This gem beat out a host of premium pinot noirs worldwide including Premier Cru and Grand Cru Burgundies as well as being the only NZ wine to win Best in Show! It's no surprise that this new 2023 vintage has already picked up 4 trophy wins.
McArthur Ridge Southern Tor is a standout example of fulsome, rounded Central Otago Pinot. Bright ruby / purple in the glass, the palate is full of black cherries, smoky oak and gamey characters. Already delicious but there are years of cellaring ahead. Another top effort from Champion Winemaker Matt Connell, and one sip will make it clear why this special wine has so many trophies under its belt. Very highly recommended.

Decanter judges write (2022 vintage)"We may not have found any Burgundian Pinot Noir wines to feature in this year’s Best In Show selection, but three Pinots from the Southern Hemisphere goes some way to compensate. This example from the Alexandra Basin sub-region shows why there is so much excitement about Central Otago. It’s a translucent dark red in colour, with articulate aromas of warm red berries, red cherries and root spice. It’s softly articulated on the palate and sweet-fruited, with great grace and poise. The wine’s structure comes more prominently from its acidity than from its relatively discreet tannin profile. In just two years, it has already begun to soften and open; look out for stones and a herbal complexity as well as root spice on the finish."
The winery writes "Ruby red in colour, this wine has a bouquet of savoury red berry fruit, black cherry and vanilla that combine with aromas of black forest berries, cloves and dark violets, finishing with soft stony notes. Dry on the palate with a core of fruit, savoury tannins give it a great texture. The oak influence is obvious with baking spices, brown sugar and smokiness."
