Chateau Garage Orca Corca Rosato 2024

SERIOUSLY SMALL-BATCH BOUTIQUE RELEASE
93/100 | Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review

Orca Corca is an absolutely gorgeous range from Ollie Powrie, featuring a new organic trio of Hawke's Bay wines. Ollie, the former Head Viticulturist for Villa Maria, is a well-known and loved character on the Hawke's Bay wine scene. Few people have such impeccable grower contacts as Ollie, so Orca Corca and Chateau Garage were always going to be blessed with the best fruit.

The sun-kissed montepulciano grapes grown in gavels, married with marzemino and teroldego has been wild fermented in French oak puncheon. Four months spent ageing on lees has brought a fine texture to this delightful rosé, which bursts with bright flavours of stone fruit, red berries and almond. It's a seriously delicious and moreish drop that is calling out for an antipasto platter, sunny afternoon and great company.

The new Orca Corca releases blew the staff away when we tasted them instore, and with just a tiny number of cases produced, you don't want to miss out on these excellent boutique wines.

Tasting Notes

In the hot Hawke’s Bay summer of 1991, Ollie, his brother Hugo, and a group of friends all went surfing at Stingray Bay. Waiting for the next big wave they noticed two large fins popping out of the water. Within minutes an orca and its calf surfaced in front of them and dived underneath them all. The moment was etched in time and the story often retold. Thirty odd years later, Hugo sent a text to Ollie proposing a new wine label called Orca Corca. Everyone loved the name and Hugo sketched an orca and logo for the label. The orca experience was coming to life…

Vinted from montepulciano, marzemino and teroldego.

Stephen Wong MW writes "Light peach. This has an entirely different bouquet for NZ rosé. Complex and delicate with smoky, savoury aromas verging on meaty with a hint of spice. Broadly earthy on the palate, the tannins are fine, emphasising the plum and spice flavours before finishing with a refreshing twist of rhubarb. The flavours are light-weight but savoury and earthy, making this a stylish food wine and a nice contrast to the sweet bing-cherry rosé which are commonly found."

The winery writes "Hedonistic aromas of sun-kissed peach, nectarine and almond croissant, a palate so delicious and delightful you’ll be lost for words."
