de la terre is the winemaking venture of Tony and Kaye Prichard who have a winery, cellar door and cafe complex on the Taihape Road out of Hastings. 'de la terre' means 'of the earth' and refers to the vineyards soils as well as the earth brick construction of their buildings. They focus on creating small parcels of unique, elegant wines and grow a number of interesting varietals that are seldom seen in NZ.
Barbera is an Italian varietal, commonly grown in the Northern Italian region of Piedmont. As de la Terre say 'Barbera expresses itself in the vineyard and wines in a similar way to Pinot Noir – we describe it as a ‘fruity version of Pinot Noir’ or ‘Pinot on speed’.' Their 2019 release shows berry notes on the palate with subtle herb / tobacco characters making an appearance. An excellent choice if you're looking for something a bit different.

The winery writes "The colour is almost Pinot Noir-like in intensity and appearance – a vibrant crimson/garnet hue. Very expressive berry-fruit with hints of dried herb and tobacco on the nose – the aromatics throw themselves out of the glass at you. The palate has a gentle attack of ripe, clean fruit and silky tannins. Generous mid-palate depth moving through to a clean, lingering finish."
