SERIOUSLY SMALL-BATCH BOUTIQUE RELEASE
FIVE STARS 93/100 | Candice Chow
Orca Corca is the latest release from Ollie Powrie, featuring a new organic trio of Hawke's Bay wines. Ollie, the former Head Viticulturist for Villa Maria, is a well-known and loved character on the Hawke's Bay wine scene. Few people have such impeccable grower contacts as Ollie, so Orca Corca and Chateau Garage were always going to be blessed with the best fruit.
This organic syrah from the Bridge Pa Triangle has been blended with a tiny portion of pinot noir, and aged in Frnech oak barrels for 24 months. Soft, juicy and entirely moreish, this delicious red blends the dark fruit and spice of syrah with the bright aromatic lift of pinot to bring together a truly enticing wine. Pair with a platter of venison carpaccio, beetroot relish and soft cheese for a winning match.
The new Orca Corca releases blew the staff away when we tasted them instore, and with just a tiny number of cases produced, you don't want to miss out on these excellent boutique wines.

In the hot Hawke’s Bay summer of 1991, Ollie, his brother Hugo, and a group of friends all went surfing at Stingray Bay. Waiting for the next big wave they noticed two large fins popping out of the water. Within minutes an orca and its calf surfaced in front of them and dived underneath them all. The moment was etched in time and the story often retold. Thirty odd years later, Hugo sent a text to Ollie proposing a new wine label called Orca Corca. Everyone loved the name and Hugo sketched an orca and logo for the label. The orca experience was coming to life…
Candice Chow writes "An enticingly rich bouquet and palate, packed with juicy fruit, herbs and spice. Soft tannins reflect dark minerals, along with balanced acidity lends a gamey, broody finish."
The winery writes "Dark, aromatic wine with poise and power. Captivating dark berry fruit, dark olive and spice with harmonious oak and sheer velvetiness on the palate."
