Caol Ila is tucked away in a quiet cove near Port Askaig. Many consider this location to be the wildest and most picturesque of the island. Situated on Loch Nam Ban, the site is ideal thanks to the abundant supply of quality water. The distillery’s name translates as ‘sound of Islay’ and dates all the way back to 1846. Considered lighter in style for an Islay, this wonderful dram still has an iodine/medicinal whiff and a peaty base upon which lie floral and fruited flavours. It starts slightly sweet, then progresses through to a charred, bone-dry finish. Intriguing as it is rare.
