Champagne H. Lanvin and Fils Brut NV - Champagne
Available from $46.99
Champagne Lanvin has a well-won reputation as one of the best value Champagnes in the New Zealand market. It has enjoyed glittering success in the award rounds over the years and this latest disgorgement is looking very smart as we head into the prime Champagne season. Lanvin is a big, generous style for those who like their Champagne with plenty of palate depth. The nose is redolent with classic freshly baked brioche notes underpinned with peach, lemon, and yeasty lees complexity. The palate is broad and richly textured with just the merest hint of fruit sweetness, before finishing crisp and dry. It’s a very appealing, rounded style, and with the price of Champagne climbing steadily over the last two years, it remains quite the bargain – a discerning choice for those who don’t crave the public affirmation that the more obvious big brands provide.
Squawking Magpie Daisy Rose 2022 - Hawke's Bay
Available from $24.99
Squawking Magpie have done a lovely job with Daisy this year and the 2022 vintage is the best I have tried to date from this well-regarded Hawke’s Bay producer. Colour plays such an important role in rosé sales these days, and the pretty shade of light pink will find favour with those who can only bring themselves to drink rosé based on the Provence Rosé colour that the French call ‘onion skin’. Daisy 2022 is vinted from a blend of syrah and merlot. It’s a dry, crunchy style with floral aromatics and a palate full of red apple, tangy cranberry, and watermelon notes. The syrah component brings a nice savoury note and extra structure into play, but the lasting impression here is fresh summer fruits presented in a very attractive aperitif style.
Rockburn Pinot Noir 2021 - Central Otago
Available from $44.99
Rockburn has long been my go-to when I am asked to recommend a premium Central Otago Pinot Noir. Sourced primarily from Cromwell fruit, it’s always a concentrated and silken expression of the darker, more opulent Central style – a style that is sure to resonate with those who like their wine glass to be packed with flavour. The 2021 is another excellent Rockburn release. The nose is classic Central Otago Pinot. Notes of red plum, cherry, and regional herbage create a segue to a palate that takes those characters to a higher plane. Mushroom and subtle oak spice flavours join the party, flowing silkily in the mouth to a finish that is harmonious and refined. It’s so well integrated that it doesn’t need food to be seen at its best and comes highly recommended as a fuller-bodied expression of Central Otago’s signature varietal.
