THE MOST COMPELLING DEAL IN OUR 25 YEAR HISTORY
We are thrilled to announce that we have landed a second parcel of 1847 First Pick Shiraz 2020. In our view, this new vintage resets the bar as the most compelling wine offer we have ever seen in the New Zealand market - and we are thrilled to have been given access to a second vintage of this spectacular wine.
In 2023 we launched the 2019 vintage of First Pick as part of our Mystery series of super-premium Aussie reds,. Based on the success of that promotion, the owners of 1847 have given us consent to reveal their brand in our marketing drive, but given the contractual nature of this offer we still can't tell you too much about it online. Click HERE to send a quick email to us, and we can tell you so much more on a 'one to one' basis. (That email address will only be monitored during normal business hours.)
Here's what we can tell you online:
98/100 | Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot "An embracing wine that captures so much of the Barossa."
97/100 | Sam Kim, Wine Orbit "Multi-layered and lavish, this is magnificent and gratifying."
95/100 | Neil Goodwin "This hedonistic expression sits in that sweet zone..."
95/100 | Ken Gargett "A gorgeous decadence here."
The well-publicised trade spat between Australia and China is still disrupting the Australian wine industry. Last year we were approached to sell an initial parcel of First Pick 'under the radar' in New Zealand to move some of the capacity that China would normally account for. The 1847 brand has had very little exposure in the New Zealand market. Apart from the parcel we secured last year we understand that only a handful of cases have ever been sold here, as the winery has concentrated on domestic sales and key international markets. Before the trade spat, 1847 enjoyed spectacular success within China, and we have been told that the only more recognised Australian wine brand in that market is Penfolds.
We have tasted this wine and, as the reviews below attest, it is spectacular; a highly perfumed, concentrated and opulent release that amplifies everything that the world loves about elite Barossa Shiraz. No expense has been spared in the vineyards or winery to create this wine. The fruit weight, tannin and acid components are beautifully expressed and the finish is incredibly long. Read the reviews below to reassure yourself what's on the table here.
In our minds, this 2020 release sits at the same level as the very finest examples of shiraz that the Barossa has to offer - including the most famous labels in Australian winemaking. It has enormous cellar potential and will continue to drink well over the coming 2-3 decades. (As a relatively young release for wine of this magnitude, we suggest that you decant it before service if you open a bottle in the next few years.)
Clearly, with an opportunity of this magnitude, stocks are strictly limited and we strongly suggest you secure your personal requirements before telling colleagues, family and friends.
As part of our arrangement with the winery, the wine has been shipped into New Zealand in unbranded 6 packs.

Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot writes "98pts. An embracing wine that captures so much of the Barossa. Comes from selected rows among selected vineyards, after which the best barrels are chosen to create this exceptional wine. Seductive aromas of black cherry and blackberry with slightly plummy characters. It’s a powerful wine yet the delivery is all one of finesse and elegance. Seamlessly woven chalky tannins thread through the beautifully weighted palate. Bright and bursting with energy."
Ken Gargett writes "95 pts. A gorgeous decadence here. Very much the wine for lovers of bold, forceful, blockbuster styles, chockful of generous fruit and richness. Those whose preferences run to elegant and subtle Pinot, for example, probably need to look elsewhere. But this full throttle, riches to more riches, style has many fans, and deservedly so. An opaque maroon. There is lashings of dense oak but high quality stuff and integration is well underway. As well as the vanillin/nutmeg imparted by the oak, there are notes of mocha, chocolate, blackcurrants and licorice. Still very youthful, this is plush, luscious and generous with excellent length and such silky tannins. A wine with surely ten to twenty years of providing pleasure ahead of it. The only complaint is that it is still a little too young, but time will quickly fix that. A touch of patience will see immense rewards. "
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit writes "97pts. Immensely complex and enticing, the wine is packed with blackberry, mocha, potpourri, vanillin oak and warm spice characters. The powerfully concentrated palate delivers outstanding depth and plush texture, wonderfully framed by beautifully melded tannins. Multi-layered and lavish, this is magnificent and gratifying. At its best: now to 2040. "
Ned Goodwin writes "95pts This hedonistic expression sits in that sweet zone, nigh on the envelope being pushed too far, while straddling a point of composure and poise. A warm, concentrated vintage, manifest as heady aromas of violet, boysenberry pie, cocoa nib, olive and creamy barrel work. Sexy stuff, built for the hedonist. This said, this classy, full-weighted wine is firmly stamped with a sense of place."
The winery writes "The 1847 wines First Pick shiraz Barossa Valley 2020 is extremely complex and its aromas are full with blackberry, chocolate mocha and caramel vanillin oak. Concentrated palate with outstanding depth and texture, and complex tannins. This is magnificently made and will leave a long lasting warmth.."

Fill yer boots
Not a particularly great fan of Aussie takes on syrah but this! Surprising subtlety, especially for such high alcohol. Can't wait to try again after cellaring - drinking exceptionally well now.
